The Otago MBA Part-Time

The part-time Otago MBA is a three- to five-year programme for high-achievers who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to commit to the full-time programme.

The Otago MBA offers executives and professionals, who live in and around Dunedin City, a competitive career advantage.

The benefits of studying part-time

  • No need to give up employment while studying
  • Apply new knowledge immediately
  • Employers receive a concurrent benefit
  • Enjoy being part of the University community
  • Study with Otago MBA students from all over the world
  • Study with other locally-based executive professionals.

Curriculum

Undertaking the part-time Otago MBA means you will be studying exactly the same curriculum as full-time students. The curriculum is delivered via a mix of lectures, interactive workshops and regular presentations from visiting business leaders and academics. Case-study analysis is interspersed throughout the course alongside a traditional lecture format.

Workload

One advantage of the part-time Otago MBA is that it offers the flexibility to choose the pace of study that suits you best. The Otago MBA comprises an academically demanding and rigorous 300-point programme which delivers a solid foundation across all areas of business. As an approximate guide, you can expect to spend up to 15 hours per week on each 15-point paper. These hours are made up of a combination of lectures, time with your team, preparation of assignments and reading. Group assignments will often require spending time with your team on weekends and in the evenings.

Entry Requirements

To commence part-time study toward the Otago MBA, students should have:

  • An undergraduate degree, or
  • Alternative acceptable qualifications, or
  • A minimum of three years experience in management and administration.

Then, after the completion of six core papers, students may:

  • Proceed with part time study towards the Otago MBA provided they have
      • achieved a B average in the first six core papers taken, or
      • achieved a pass in at least six core papers and obtained a GMAT score of 550
  • Exit the programme by completing the University of Otago Diploma in Business Administration (DipBusAdmin).

Exit Option

We recognise that personal situations can change over the course of part-time study. For this reason, part-time students are given the choice of exiting the programme and still receiving a well-respected university qualification, the University of Otago Diploma in Business Administration (DipBusAdmin).

The DipBusAdmin is our shorter and more flexible postgraduate-level business qualification. To receive this qualification you must complete six core papers and the DipBusAdmin Business Project.
